Kill of the Week: 16 Bil Golem

16_Bil_ISK_GolemBurn Jita has provided a lot of drama over the weekend, including this weeks Kill of the Week.  Hands down, this is our winner:  Mr. 16 Bil ISK Golem in Jita.  Lots of people are already discussing why this guy would be undocking in Jita during this particular weekend.  Let alone why he’d be flying such an expensive ship in hi-sec without at least checking his map first.  But I don’t even want to focus on that.  instead I want to focus on his fit — an incredibly expensive fit that nets him only 600 DPS with those wickedly expensive T1 Cruise Missiles he’s got in his hold.  690 DPS if he loads with Navy!  Folks, I get that in my Tengu which is only 11% as expensive as this beast.  Less tanky, yet equally as effective!

There’s some aspects of his fit I don’t quite grasp, like the two Large Energy Transfers.  I’ve been trying to come up with a plausible explanation why someone would fit those on a Golem, and just not getting it.  Maybe if he ran missions with an alt that wasn’t cap stable?  Like, “a lot” un-stable?  Maybe?  Hell, I don’t know, so little of this makes any sense what so ever anyway.

Assuming he’s not actually using the energy transfers, its Cap stable running everything with all level 5s, except the tractor beam.  With Tractor beam cap will run for 33 mins.  Replacing the energy transfers with Salv II and Drone Link Augmenter II drops the cap life down to 18 mins, assuming the Salv and Tractor are in constant use.  But even that begs the question of why wouldn’t you just bring an alt in a Noctis to salvage?  You’d save a lot of time and you’re probably better served to run a couple Drone Links in the high slots for the pesky Frigs and Cruisers to boot.

Lets focus on his DPS though — The 600 DPS he spent 16 Bil ISK on.  I’ve been playing with the fit for a while trying to up the DPS and I haven’t gotten very far.  Not with a Cruise Missile fit, any way.  He can’t swap out the Capacitor Control Circuit rigs for Flares or Rigors in order to increase his applicable DPS on small targets because he becomes very cap unstable at that point.  Between that and the lack of a TP this fit is very dependent on drones for Frigates and Cruisers.  But without drone links he’d have to let them get within close range for his drones to reach them.  I guess that’s fine, but if you’re spending 16 Bil ISK on a ship I’d think you’d want to be able to pop everything before it gets without 50 km of you.  Maybe that’s just me?

He’ll chew through BC and BS targets, but at only 600 DPS he’s not going to be 3-4 shotting BS’s or BCs like he would be in a Torp fit.  1200+ DPS is pretty easily achievable in a Torp fit Golem.

Something like this does 1249 DPS with Rage out to 24 km, 1062 DPS out to 29 km with Navy, and 832 DPS out to 45 km with Javelins:

Ages ago, I found this fit which I used for my Golem before I sold it all off. I used a modified fit, since I wasn’t quite as rich, dropping the CN Invulns for T2 and a T2 Shield Boost Amp. Still, it was enough to tank almost everything, though I did tend to have trouble in the Angel Extrav bonus room.

But the main thing that stood was the DPS, which was immense. 3-4 shotting BS’s, 1 shotting BC’s/Cruisers (non-elites). It was really fantastic.

Since I’m starting to make quite a good bit of money back, I’m trying to decide whether I want to go for a Golem again or move to a Vargur, which I’ve also managed to train for in the meantime. The only problem is I tend to hang out in Amarr space, which means TDs from the Sansha which ruins any gunship.

But speaking of Burn Jita, I went there earlier with an alt expecting craziness and explosions and found nothing but the normal crazy overpopulated trade hub. Wonder if everyone went to bed already.

I haven’t gone anywhere near Jita since Thursday night. The pace of destroyed ships is a few hundred per hour in Jita and a handful more in surrounding systems, which was enough to tell me to steer clear for a while. Even last year ships were able to get in and out so its not surprising that there are lulls now, or holes in the ganks.

I don’t like running ships without prop mods, and especially something with a relatively short range like a Torp Golem. Even with Javelins there are missions with kiting BS’s that stay just out of range at ~51km or so. I’d get pretty frustrated with that pretty quickly! You know, I’m getting a bit pepped for the eventual Marauder balance. They have to do something nice for the Golem I’d think. I’d like there to be a clear reason to skill up into Marauders from Navy and Faction BS’s. Not sure that’s really the case now…
