I don’t know why I haven’t tried this before, being the mount hound I am, but I finally gave a go at soloing Alysrazor in Firelands Normal 10. It was beyond easy, though I found you do have to be a bit careful not to reset the fight. Which I did twice. Alysrazor drops the single most awesome ground mount in the game, modelling after my previous favorite ground mount — the Raven Lord. Alysrazor drops the Flametalon of Alysrazor. Pretty cool, right? I thought so too, yet when Firelands was the tier in WoW I was off playing EVE Online or not playing any MMOs at all.
Its really hard to find groups that are want to raid Firelands any more and so my desire for that mount, Fandral’s Flamescythe, and the Smouldering egg of Millagazor have gone unrealized. However I found out today I can indeed solo Alysrazor, and so perhaps soon I’ll be able to obtain those desired rewards.
I didn’t FRAPs the fight, but will next week. It’s easy to describe the fight however. First you need to clean out the courtyard of mobs. There’s two castors and two Monstrosities, and two egg piles that you’ll need to kill before you can do anything else, but it takes only a few minutes to do. Kill the two castors in the center of the area first. Once they’re dead head to one of the egg piles and start DPSing it. You’ll notice the two Monstrosities spit a trail of flaming projectiles that will slowly follow you where ever you go? They’re easy to avoid but they will also damage the egg piles, so run in circles around the first egg pile until it’s destroyed. Rinse and repeat on the second pile, then kill both Monstrosities. If you run circles around both while you DPS them, neither will be able to hit you with the flaming shells.
Once the two Monstrosities are dead you’ll see Fandral Staghelm in the back of the area next to some captive NPCs. Hit him with any spell or effect and it will initiate the fight. As soon as you hit him he’ll snare you for 30 seconds while Alysrazor emerges, then will fly off leaving Alysrazor to deal with you. Here’s where the fun begins.
As Alysrazor descends toward the very northern most part of the room, get behind her and start attacking as soon as you’re able. She’ll drop flaming feathers as she advances across the room, which you’ll want to pick up. You’ll need three because you’re going flying! Follow her through the air, DPSing her as hard as you can. Every few seconds she will deposit a ring of flame behind her, off to her left or right. You’ll need to fly through the rings to extend your Burning Essence — the buff you get from the burning feathers. If you neglect to do this at least once every 30 seconds you’ll lose your buff and will fall to the ground. But the ring of flame also gives you a haste buff. If you end up getting 25 stacks of the buff you’ll get a very nice 75% Crit buff. Nuff said.
The fight is a three phase fight, and should last all of 7 minutes or so. In phase one she will fly around the area and you’ll be following. As I said I did reset the fight a couple times and you might see that occur as well. Once she just despawned in the initial seconds of the fight for no apparent reason, but the second time she despawned (in phase 3 no less) I think it was because I crossed over the boundary of the area. Be careful of that, but as you’re about to hear, please do cross out of the area in phase 2.
In phase 1 Alysrazor will swoop low over the area twice. The third time she does it she’ll be landing. I believe she says “these skys are mine” when she’s about to land and this is your cue to hightail it to a safe spot just outside of the area. You may have noticed a lava pool just to the east of the Alysrazor area? You have five seconds to fly from Alysrazor to the western shore of that pool and wait for Alysrazor to take to the air again. You’ll need to heal through this phase, and I ended up taking Heart of the Wild to do it. Rejuvenation easily kept up with the AOE damage.
After a short interlude Alysrazor will reignite and take to the skys once again. She’ll head toward you so be ready to start DPSing her again as soon as you can. After a few seconds she’ll rise out of your range but will leave a bunch of feathers behind for you to pick up again. Catch up with her and burn her down.
Unfortunately I did not get my mount from this first attempt, but I’ll be running this weekly from here on. Will have to see if I can solo the other bosses too!
